Loop Head Lighthouse
Loop Head Lighthouse
Take a quick ferry trip across to the other side of the estuary and learn about the fascinating history of Loop Head lighthouse. This iconic silhouette of an Irish lighthouse was built in 1854 however a signal fire has been burning on the roof of the old lightkeepers cottage since 1670. There is an exhibition on the history of Irish lighthouses available but we highly recommend taking the guided tour up along the winding stairs of the lighthouse tower. When you get out onto the balcony don't forget to wave back over to us in Ballybunion, just look back across the estuary for the vast stretch of golden sandy beach. Now that you have made it to the edge of the world you have to take it all in by exploring the clifftop terrain around the lighthouse. Walk along the edge of the sea stack known as lovers leap that has peeled itself away from the mainland while taking in views that stretch all the way from the Connemara mountains to the Blasket Islands.
