Ardfert Friary

Take a trip back in time through centuries of Ireland’s spiritual practices by visiting the Franciscan friary located in the town of Ardfert. The town was a very important diocesan in the early medieval period. The Friary is just one of many fascinating historical religious sites to discover when you're in the region. This impressive building has so much character and offers lots of interesting features to admire and areas to explore as you take in this ancient marvel. The friary in Ardfert stands as a picturesque ruin on the lands of Ardfert house. The town's monastic history stretches as far back to the sixth century when St Brendan ‘The Navigator’ founded one of his monasteries in the area. The friary is estimated to have been constructed in the 12th century undergoing expansion in the 13th century. The striking tower that was constructed at the west end of the friary in the fifteenth century is somewhat unusual compared to the rest of the romanesque and pre-romanesque masonry along with being distinctively different to the medieval architectural features.
